Being scared depends largely on the person, what may creep you the hell out could be a laugh to the next. to get under someone's skin and stay there is a massive feat, one
that I think World of horror accomplishes in spades.
See, The great thing about the world of horror is how it plays with expectations, how it delivers a unique experience each playthrough leaving you never quite comfortable at
the constantly changing scenarios and how it pays off with its sense of dread by leaving you clawing and screaming your way to the end, if you can make it.
Leaving your past behind in search of answers you step off the bus and into the shoes of a wannabe investigator, who this is can be chosen or made to be random but each
the main character has strengths and weakness that will help you and hinder you throughout your perilous journey to uncover just who is this mysterious cult that has arrived
in town, what are they up to and what is in the locked lighthouse.
The gameplay while simple is addicting and the dice roll system means that your never guaranteed success or failure in a task.
after starting the game and heading to your apartment you'll select a case to investigate. investigating a case involves using the map bar at the bottom to investigate
different locations, gaining experience, useful items, terrible curses and each time increasing a DOOM meter on the bottom of the screen, when that doom meter reaches 100 it is game over.
To aid you in this you have perks and stats, the perks gained from leveling up will make your playthrough MUCH easier with the right choices for your playstyle and
the stats will make investigating a bit safer as well as more choices available in certain situations. Investigating an area initiates a small animation and then results, did you find a severed hand? will you
investigate it? or did you stumble into an old friend, why is she so shaken? should you ask or leave it alone? your choices aren't so simple as the outcomes are rarely what you would expect playing on your mind and leaving you paranoid of every encounter. to progress the case you must investigate the area with a circle around it BUT you can also search other areas for experience etc as well as complete bonus objectives to alter the outcome of the case, that's right, most cases have 3 or more outcomes and discovering them all is a treat!
you can use various functions on the map as well such as a few stores (even some unlockable ones) and a schoolyard where you can meet friends and ask them to join your party, and a library where you can learn a
new spell or gain exp at the cost of some extra doom. the hospital costs doom as well but can remove the deadly aftermath of battles which can often leave you with debilitating stat decreases.
The battle system while confusing at first is very fun and charming, for physical encounters you are given multiple options for attack and defense, you stack those in a small bar that will show you the time it takes each attack to happen and how much of that bar it takes up when you have arranged your actions how you want them you start the round and your actions go in order against the enemy and the outcome is shown.
in a spiritual battle, you are able to use a series of claps and bows (5 usually) to calm the spirit and have it leave ending the battle successfully, you must figure out the pattern before its too late! I personally love this touch.
World of horror while heavily manga-inspired is for all horror fans, it takes a bit of everything and then turns it on its head leaving you wanting more, it definitely evokes thoughts of Junji Ito, Ju-On or Noroi but it is very much its own terrifying entity. with its release on PC, a hit for fans so far and its Switch release on the way this game is looking to turn heads in a big way and I don't doubt it will. since it came screaming out of the gates with its top-notch
the art style and absolutely addicting gameplay and disturbing imagery you'll be hooked from the first time you watch as the Scissor Lady gives you a nice smile to the end of the road when you can finally see what's lurking in the lighthouse.
Below we have a chat with the creator of the game, Pawel, and learn some exclusive secrets that I KNOW you've been dying to find the answers to as well as links to everything world of horror, thank you for reading this far! unfortunately...
you've caught the attention of something truly evil...
Interview with creator and artist Pawel (Panstasz)!:
Paweł(panstasz): My name is Paweł, I'm 27 years old and I thought that drawing stuff in MS Paint was a good idea. My game, WORLD OF HORROR is now 2 months old!
Lily: your game has a HEAVY emphasis on style and atmosphere, it brings back memories of MANY old mac and point and click games, where did the idea come from to have your game follow this nostalgiac path
Paweł: From the start, I was trying to emulate the manga style but I'm no artist myself - I had to teach myself everything. Low-res 1bit seemed like an obvious choice. Manga pages are b/w after all and low-res allowed me to experiment with art and learn the basics while getting a visually unique product
Lily: Working solely with ms paint to do your drawings is quite the feat considering how well done the art of the game is, what goes into planning each piece and how long would a completed picture take
Pawl:That's one question I don't know how to answer. It definitely takes less time than you'd think a piece made in MS Paint would but everything depends on the size and complexity. A full-screen town scene could take a few hours easily.
Lily: The gameplay itself is reminiscent of Oregon trail mixed with an old point and click games, what inspired this choice for a horror setting
Paweł: the very first version of WOH was a physical mix of a board and card game, using bootleg art for me and my friends to enjoy
I've found that the testing process of changing the card in the art program, printing it, and cutting took too much time
and for some strange reason, I thought learning how to make a video game will be faster! Many of the cards and rules from the original remained in the current version of the game
Lily: Any chance we'll ever see the card game release in some format or another? perhaps a print and play
Paweł: A refreshed version with updated art? That's certainly a possibility for the future.
Lily: It's clear you have a love of urban legends, especially Japanese urban legends, What drew you to that part of folklore over another
Paweł: I've always been a fan of Japanese horror and urban legends are something that connects with you on a different level. They are fascinating and still have this element of uncertainty that I think makes them so effective
Lily: What urban legend would your nightmare situation be
Paweł: This will be oddly specific but Jinmenken, the rumored dogs with human faces. Any animal acting like or having human features is my biggest phobia. Seeing them would definitely make my heart stop
Lily:I hate those fish with people faces
they terrify me
Seaman (Dreamcast Game)was my nightmare game as a kid
Paweł: have you seen that photo of an eel with a human face?
(Horrible fish monster was then shared with me)
Lily: oh goddamn
well I didn't need to sleep tonight it's cool lol
wait why the hell do you have that lol
Paweł: h-haha
Lily: So to go back a second lol, what is your favorite piece of art from your game, one that you feel truly proud or happy with
Paweł: It's hard for me to pick one favorite piece but some of the injuries and curses art as close to my definition of perfection as they can be
Lily: What case disturbs you the most
Paweł: my "favorite" disturbing case is still a WIP so it's not in the game but it does contain an animal with human features
Lily: I saw the centipede machine, I found it grotesque, you have a very creative fan base
What is some horror you can recommend for those that enjoyed what they found in World of horror?
Paweł: There are two movies that were a major inspiration for WOH. One of them is Noroi, which is a 10/10 found footage horror, and the other is called Curse of Dog God from the late 70s.
Lily: I fuckin LOVE noroi, was so so good
Paweł: hell yeah
Lily: What are some closing words and any shout outs you'd like to give. I can tell I've kept you up long enough lol
Paweł: The game is now available in early access on PC. Full release and consoles (Nintendo Switch and PS4) are coming hopefully in Q4 this year. The best way of following progress would be through my twitter
@panstasz
